Jackie Chan Stuntmaster, titled Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster in PAL's in-game menu, is a beat 'em up platform game developed by Radical Entertainment and published by Midway Home Entertainment for the PlayStation.
It stars martial artist Jackie Chan, who fights his way past numerous villains in different locations across New York City.
Jackie Chan has a PS1 video game! And it's painful! Jackie Chan Stuntmaster is the kind of game that's polished enough to beat, but funky enough to make you yell once in awhile. Nothing overly mean or difficult, Stuntmaster still manages to make you work for victory.
A mix of beat 'em up and platformer, it's the platforming that makes Jackie Chan Stuntmaster shine. Perhaps not in the best ways, but I found great entertainment (and testing of my self control) during the platform sections. A sense of Crash Bandicoot is felt in some levels, mainly the later ones when you find Jackie getting knocked out trains, buildings, platforms, and crushed by factory belt presses. With 3 lives per level attempt, you'll find yourself restarting entire sections until you finally master the layout.
The fighting is the weakest part of the game, though a nice break from the dropping off buildings sections. With a few short combos, a parry, lock on, and weapon useage; the combat had potential, but leaves you wanting more. If anything, Jackie Chan Stuntmaster feels almost like two different games. The first few missions are mostly combat with a few windows or ledges to leap off of. Later, the game is mostly ledges and leaping, with a reminder that you're Jackie Chan and meant to be fighting thugs sprinkled in.
There's also boss fights. Not many, 4-5 at most. They range from OK to AWFUL. This is where the flaws of the combat system kick in. Getting grabbed mid air, combos broken. You find yourself relying on a few gimmicks and cheap strategies to get by. Though the bosses aren't overly difficult all the same.
That's basically this PS1 game. A little cheap, a little unrefined, but not overly difficult. It has its charms, such as enemies and Jackie Chan himself having cute and funny dialogue during gameplay, the FMV cutscenes being well crafted with a sense of fun to them, and the locations having a nice colour mix happening for them. I find Jackie Chan Stuntmaster to be a Playstation game that might make a fun run for anyone that likes platformers and isn't looking for the AAA big budget experience every time. While other PS1 games like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Medievil, and a few others of smilar adventure, platformers, and action games are better (though Medievil's platforming is far worse than Jackie Chan's PS1 game here), you should check this game out and see how you feel. Though be warned; once you make it to the train hopping section, you'll either find yourself hating the game too much to continue, or spite through the rest of the levels and save granpa.
