Jade Cocoon is an interesting change-of-pace RPG for the PS1. It combines elements of Pokemon, and Monster Rancher in a much smaller world than the average PS1 RPG. The world is unique, though I always thought it seemed a little weird, but still mysterious. While other RPG's on the PS1 were going for bigger, better, over-the-top, the change of pace in Jade Cocoon is a welcomed one in the world of PS1 RPGs.

As you can see, the main character in the game fights enemies in turn-based battles were whittling them down enough offers the ability to capture them, like Pokemon. Captured enemies, once purified can then be used as allies in battle, combined with each other to make uniquely new monster creations like in Monster Rancher (minus the part where you create uniquely new monsters with CD's that is), or turned into silk to sell for cash.

Overall, Jade Cocoon is far from the greatest, or longest RPG in the PS1 library, but it offers a idiomatic combination of capturing monsters, a unique art direction, and a good story to follow. If you grow tired of the Final Fantasies, Xenogears, and Chrono Crosses, give Jade Cocoon a look if you're looking for a solid change of pace.

Note: I encoded this in 4:3, and stretched the image for this 1080p video to make it a little blurry. Believe me, this game looks better at standard def, and a little blurry. Higher def just makes everything look like a mess of pixels, especially the prerendered backgrounds.
