The late Heath Ledger earned an Oscar for playing The Joker on the big screen in 2008’s The Dark Knight and it now looks like Warner Bros is eyeing a recent Oscar winner to take over the role for 2016’s Suicide Squad. First reported by The Wrap and since confirmed by multiple other sources, Jared Leto is currently being eyed to take on the role of Batman’s greatest foe in the planned supervillain team-up movie. When the film was first announced the studio promised multiple A-list stars were being sought for roles and they seem to be keeping their promise. Though no deal is done, Leto recently told THR that he had an eye on a secret project saying quote, “I am excited about what's happening. There are incredible opportunities and I'm very grateful for them. I'm looking forward to making films again now that the tour is wrapping up. It's going to be an exciting 2015. I've sworn to keep my mouth shut but I think that very shortly there will be something to talk about, that's for sure.” Suicide Squad is set to hit theaters on August 5th, 2016 and is being directed by Fury’s David Ayer. In the comics, the Suicide Squad are a group of convicted supervillains who agree to take on dangerous black ops missions for the US government in exchange for commuted sentences. The project has been in development for some time with the original script including lesser known characters like Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and Vixen, but Ayers is reportedly rewriting the script and adding more established villains like Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor, The Joker and fan-favorite Harley Quinn, who has yet to make her big screen debut. Latino Review recently reported that English model Cara Delevingne was being eyed to play Harley in the film. As for The Joker, Ryan Gosling was reportedly the studios first choice, but he turned it down not wanting to be tied into several films. Other actors being sought for unspecified roles include Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Tom Hardy, who of course played DC villain Bane in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.
