It’s no secret that Sony is having trouble figuring out just what to do with their floundering Spider-Man franchise, but could they actually be thinking of making a spinoff movie about Aunt May? We’ve heard some crazy rumors, but this one could be the most insane one ever. According to the folks at Latino Review, Sony is currently in the process of developing an Aunt May movie, but it wouldn’t star Sally Field and it wouldn’t feature Peter Parker or Spider-Man. Instead, it would be an origin story with an espionage element focusing on a young May, similar to Marvel’s Agent Carter. Keep in mind this is just a rumor and most likely it’s just something the studio considered as they try to figure out what their next step is for the franchise and what characters they are able to utilize as opposed to a movie that’s actively in development. Regardless though, if this is something they even contemplated for a moment, it doesn’t bode well for our favorite web slinger’s future or for those hoping to see the rights revert back to Marvel. Though this summer’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 managed to make over $700 million at the worldwide box office, it was the lowest grossing Spider-Man film ever and continued a decline in ticket sells that started with the 2012 reboot. Since then, Sony has been scrambling to figure out how to turn things around for one of their strongest properties. So far, they’ve pushed a third Spider-Man outing from 2016 to sometime in 2018 and decided to focus on their supervillain team-up movie, Sinister Six, that is set for November 11th, 2016. Of course, that film will face strong competition from DC’s villain team-up Suicide Squad, that will arrive 3 months earlier. As for the Aunt May movie, Marvel tried to do something similar in the comic world releasing a romance mini-series in 2003 called Trouble. Kick-Ass writer Mark Millar penned the series which focused on teenage versions of Aunt May, Uncle Ben and Peter’s parents Richard and Mary Parker. The comic attempted to give Peter a new origin story that featured May as Peter’s birth mother who decides to give him up to Mary. Needless to say, that comic didn’t go over to well with fans and was a financial dud. In addition to the rumored Aunt May movie, Sony is also developing spinoffs featuring anti-hero Venom and a female driven superhero movie called Glass Ceiling that is rumored to feature several female Spider-Man characters teaming up. We’ll have to wait and see if any of these films actually end up getting made, but you can click here to check out 7 other comic book movies that almost got made. But first, is there anyone out there that thinks an Aunt May movie could actually work? Share your thoughts in the comments or tweet us @ClevverMovies or me @MiriamIsa. Until next time, I’m Miriam Isa, thanks for watching!
