Word on the fast streets is that director Justin Lin may be returning for one last ride and a possible victory lap around the box office track with the Fast & Furious gang. According to Deadline, Universal is entertaining talks with Lin to return to the franchise to shoot back-to-back films that would signal the final flag on their laps around the world. Now this certainly wouldn’t be a poor decision – Lin, after all, is the one who made Fast & Furious a viable franchise to begin with, directing 2003’s Tokyo Drift, 2009’s Fast & Furious, 2011’s Fast 5, and 2013’s Fast & Furious 6. It wouldn’t be too far out the realm to assume the guy can bring it home for the studio. As you probably know, Lin decided to pass the directing wheel on next year’s 7th installment, Furious 7 to The Conjuring’s James Wan in order to work on other projects. Most notably The Bourne Legacy sequel starring Jeremy Renner that was supposed to arrive in theaters next summer, but then was pushed to 2016 and has since been delayed indefinitely now that Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass will be returning to the franchise. With season two of HBO’s True Detectives the only thing on Lin’s directing plate, his availability has opened up and it looks like Universal is looking to take advantage of that. As for Lin, he will follow up Furious 7 with a return to the horror genre to direct The Conjuring 2 which is set to hit theaters on June 10th, 2016. As we said, word is talks with Universal and Lin aren’t just for one film, but for two that would be made back-to-back and with how most of the films endings are similar to Marvel’s in nature, in terms of setting up the next installment, we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that an end-credits scene was shoehorned into the upcoming Furious 7 to make way for this possible 8 & 9 ending to the franchise. But is pushing this series forward smart? We can think of a few other film series’ that have had six sequels or more: Police Academy Saw, American Pie, Beethoven… Perhaps the crew of the Fast & Furious would benefit from a long stretch in between as to not wear out audiences on the brand? Of course, an easy counter to this is Star Wars, which is about to enter their sixth and many more sequels, the X-Men franchise just did theirs this year as well with no plans of stopping, and the James Bond franchise doesn’t seem to be lacking either. So of course there’s hope. And it’s not like Fast & Furious hasn’t proven itself to be a moneymaker in the age of the fun, blockbuster franchise. And this would be in alignment with Universal’s claim on the non-superhero franchise game, with Fast & Furious being their biggest next to the upcoming Monster Movie reboots, Jurassic World, and the Bourne films. Things are looking good for Universal, Lin, the franchise, and most importantly the fans who will gladly benefit from another two pictures from the director. Of course, this all-hoping Furious 7 doesn’t suck, but we doubt it will based on how absurdly fun Fast & Furious 6 was to see in theaters and how exciting the Furious 7 trailer was.
