Jeopardy! champ Amy Hummel nabs nailbiter third win as recent fan-favorite ‘challenges’ her to a ‘faceoff’
Jeopardy contestant Amy Hummel is suddenly on a hot streak, and even this season's previous big winner revealed she's paying attention.
The Wisconsin ER doctor defeated Dan Byrne and Matt Mawhinney on Friday night in a razor-thin finish for a three-day total of $58,195.
After a runaway win on Thursday and comparisons looks-wise Maggie Gyllenhaal, Amy was back for more.
In the Jeopardy! round, the game quickly became a two-person battle between her and Georgia-based consultant and Yacht rocker Dan.
Amy amassed $5,400 and the first Daily Double, and Dan led with $6,600, while Florida-based "democracy entrepreneur" Matt trailed with $800.
In Double Jeopardy!, Matt entered the running by nabbing the second Daily Double, giving him $4000, but this momentum didn't last long.
Amy regained the lead on a $1500 wager on the last Daily Double and went into overdrive.
'PRESSURE IS ON'
Going into Final Jeopardy, she had $17,700, and Dan had $10,200 - so either could still win - and Matt had $4,000
The crucial clue under "U.S. GEOGRAPHY" read, "At 14,410′, it’s one of North America’s highest volcanoes; a Puyallup name for it can be translated to “bring the water”
Matt didn't finish, and Dan was correct with "Mt. Rainier," causing Ken Jennings to exclaim "Woah!" as he gained $10,199 and the lead.
The host turned to Amy and remarked, "The pressure is on" for her to be correct, which she was, adding $2,800.
Amy won by just $101 leaving her with $20,500, a winning smile, and a terrific three-day total.
BETT ON IT!
Fans flooded social media, buzzing over the sudden hot streak just a week after Alison Betts.
"Another good win for Amy. And I totally didn't google 'dirty version of St. Olaf fight song,'" one Redditor quipped.
"All I want is the Alison Betts-Amy Hummel ToC faceoff that we deserve," longed another.
Alison chimed into the thread and accepted the challenge.
She replied to the above fan, "I am rooting so hard for Amy! Would love to get to see her again for the ToC, she’s amazing."
A fourth wrote, "I still think that Amy needs to be more aggressive with her DD wagers, but it was absolutely a well-deserved win once again!"
A fifth agreed, "For sure. Too small DD wagers and she plays a bit slowly thus 2 games in a row with clues left on the board. But she is good and interesting and I am rooting for her. More aggressive DD wagers and this one probably would have been another runaway."
Amy will face two more challengers on Monday and, if she wins, will be the third qualifier for the next Tournament of Champions.
GIRLS' CLUB!
Two weeks ago brought the long-awaited return to normal games after a flurry of Jeopardy! tournaments.
Ironically enough, it took just one game before the season's first streaker arrived in Alison.
Alison won five games, $121,500 total, and the hearts of fans during her run with her strong play and hilarious anecdotes
Alison will be back for the next Tournament of Champions along with Celebrity Jeopady's Lisa Ann Walter.
If Amy also qualifies, the next ToC will consist of three females and no men so far - which is great to see.
WHY SHE'S SO CALM
Dr. Hummel is an emergency medicine physician in Madison, Wisconsin, according to US News Health.
Her profession may explain why, as fans have noticed, she's a "slow clue-picker."
Amy received her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine after undergrad at St. Olaf (fight song in 3/4 time). She has been in practice for nearly five years.
Her specialty is emergency medicine which entails having to, "rapidly assess and treat patients with catastrophic injuries."
"Common reasons to visit emergency rooms include heart attack, drug overdose, shock, burns and massive bleeding."
In other words, her intense job necessitates a calm demeanor, which may be why she's so calm - perhaps too calm for some fans' liking with some clues left on the board twice.
