Jeopardy! champ Amy Hummel turns heads with resemblance to A-list actress as she wows fans with ‘strong’ first win
JEOPARDY! fans have scored a promising new champion in Amy Hummel on Wednesday's down-to-the-wire episode.
The Wisconsin ER doctor - who fans said unquestionably resembled Maggie Gyllenhaal - beat Paul Drake and Mark Lashley winning $18,900.
Many Jeopardy! fans are hungry for a hot streak, as no one's lasted long since the iconic five-day champ Alison Betts lost last week.
In tow, all three players took to the Alex Trebek stage hungry for the win.
After the Jeopardy! round, Mark - the defending one-day champ, had $4600, (dropping $1000 on the first Daily Double), while Paul had $5,800, and Amy led with $6,000.
In Double Jeopardy!, Amy - who revealed she's a "nomad" having lived in four states in just the last year given her profession - kept the money moves coming but it was clear everyone came to play.
Mark found the second Daily Double but was incorrect and dropped $2000, while Amy dropped $3000 on the remaining one after "quietly" building up "quite a lead," according to Ken Jennings.
That meant anyone could win going into Final Jeopardy, as Amy still led with $13,200, Paul had $9,400 and Mark had $8,600.
The deciding clue under "HISTORIC TRANSPORTS" read, "Decorated with an illustration of the Montgolfiers’ craft, the smoking room aboard this could be accessed only via an airlock."
Everyone was correct with "Hindenburg," and Amy (having crossed out "Zeppelin" last minute) added $5,700 to become the new champ, flashing a winning smile.
'MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL VIBE'
Fans took to social media impressed by her performance against two determined foes (with 20 correct responses and only 2 misses).
Many also pointed out that whether it was her short bob haircut or chic black top, she looked a bit like The Dark Knight actress.
"Go Amy. Anyone else get a Maggie Gyllenhaal vibe?" one Redditor wrote.
"I was thinking the same thing!" wrote another.
"Amy's giving me a little bit of Maggie Gyllenhaal. #jeopardy" wrote a third on X.
A fourth Redditor wrote, "She clearly was the strongest competitor with a $17,200 Coryat. That Kimodo dragon flub on DD3 was one of her only two misses."
Of course, this isn't the first Daily Double-take as fans endlessly pointed out how Sam Buttrey looks eerily like Steve Martin, and Troy Meyer a bit like Bill Heder.
Amy will face two new challengers tomorrow night to see if she can turn her win into the next streak, and perhaps become the show's next famous Amy.
INTENSE JOB
Dr. Hummel is an emergency medicine physician in Madison, Wisconsin, according to US News Health.
It sounds like her job makes the pressure on Jeopardy! look like a walk in the park.
She received her medical degree from University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and has been in practice between for nearly five years.
Her specialty is emergency medicine which entails having to, "rapidly assess and treat patients with catastrophic injuries."
"Common reasons to visit emergency rooms include heart attack, drug overdose, shock, burns and massive bleeding."
JEOPARDY! MASTERS APPROACHES
Meanwhile, Jeopardy! Masters will return for Season 2 in just a week, premiering on May 1, 2024.
The six current highest-ranked contestants will compete in primetime on ABC, playing two games per hour-long episode.
The showdown will feature Masters Season 1 champion James Holzhauer, returning contestants Matt Amodio and Mattea Roach, Producer's Pick Amy Schneider, and newcomers Yogesh Raut and Victoria Groce.
The episodes will air at 8 p.m. but fear not, they will not interfere with regular gameplay, and both the regular show and Masters will air those nights.
The Masters grand prize is $500,000, a glitzy Alex Trebek trophy and the title of Jeopardy! Masters Champion.
