Jerp plays Steel Assault [demo] - Arcade-styled Run Whip & Zip (2021-02-08)
Steel Assault is shaping up to be a solid tribute to old-school action platformers of the SNES/Arcade areas. Outside some powerup stuff (and a bar I never fully understood), you generally have an aimable electric whip and a zipline that you can fire out and use to traverse from area to area (or simply give yourself move ledges to hang from). The game’s got an interesting hybrid feel - while the whip has a solid Castlevania feel to it, the movement feels more like Mega Man X.
The “arcade” difficulty is true to the quarter munchers of yester-year. I ended up having to switch to normal mode to finish the demo, and the resulting difficulty was closer to what you’d expect from popular games from the SNES era (though perhaps on the easier side) . I figure that’ll get tuned a bit by release.
While the zipline didn’t appear to feature as prominently in the demo as the _many_ gifs posted on the developer’s Twitter, I got to use it a bit and have a small taste of the extra movement and combat ability it provides.
