Jerp plays Potion Craft [demo] - Surprisingly-Satisfying Alchemy Simulator (2021-02-25)
Caught wind of this during the Steam Game Festival earlier this month - thought I missed the window to try it! Seems the demo was extended and I finally found time to load it up.
Potion Craft is a game about alchemy - you mix ingredients to manipulate a variety of effects from curing injuries to imbuing objects with elemental effects. Each customer arrives with a specific goal in mind and your job is figure out how to brew a potion to help them out.
What really stands out is how the crafting system works - not only do you have the satisfying systems of grinding and mixing the potions yourself, but each ingredient added and manipulated navigates your potion around a map - reach a particular effect and heat your cauldron to add that effect into the potion.
You initially have no idea where the effects are (as well as what obstacles might cause your brew to fail!), so you have to add and mix ingredients to explore the map and see what's available. To further encourage that, moving around the map picks up experience that's also scattered about - sometimes you might not want to beeline straight to an effect as you can level up to upgrade your talents.
The more I play alchemy games and the more I reflect on games that I've played in the past with alchemy-themed systems (even stuff like Secret of Evermore), the more I think alchemy as a gameplay theme is kinda my jam.
