Jerp plays Narita Boy [demo] - Stylish 80s cyber-venture (2021-02-09)
Narita Boy was a latecomer to the list of demos I was planning on checking out for the February 2021 Steam Game Festival. BlacRyu had pointed it out to me and a quick glance at a few seconds of the trailer on Steam looked pretty solid, so I ended up trying it out.
The game turned out to be this really impressive nod to 80s feels, especially stuff like Tron. The game’s got a lot of personality, and feels a lot more than a simple action platformer (is it a Metroidvania? - maybe it branches out after the first area) - instead sort of a big nostalgia trip similar to what 198X seems to be (I still gotta try that, too!).
Narita Boy looks super impressive so far, with a lot of personality to each area, the animations, the way the scripted sequences are presented, etc. On top of that, apparently the devs aren’t relying on tile systems for level layouts or particle systems for VFX, so they have to hand-draw much more than you’d expect, which is a huge commitment -- but so far it seems they’re up to the task and it’s paying off.
