Jim Power: The Lost Dimension | NES playthrough | Original hardware
0This is a game that never got it’s release for the Genesis until 2022. So, they also made this NES version as a new game that I bought from Strictly Limited games. I was impressed by the animation of Jim running. But that’s about it. The weapon upgrades are not much of an upgrade. You can charge your shot but this makes you stand still. But you can bypass being stuck to the ground by jumping, so you won’t see the great running animation much as I jump around to hold the charge. They should have removed the standing still charge mechanic as it can be bypassed anyway.
I played this game on easy mode, but it was still very difficult. I found out later that the difficulty settings just start you on different amounts of health. 5 hits on easy and one hit on hard, which is just ridiculous.
The controls aren’t great and some enemies can be annoying as a consequence.
The graphics are not great for something made in 2022. Jim looks like he could be in a Spectrum game (apart from the lovely running animation), and the backgrounds are largely just pitch black which is kind of depressing.
I found myself wanting to get through this game because the difficulty is harsh, especially when you have to do a boss at the end of a level when you’ve been super careful to try to keep as much energy as possible. The strange thing is that the jetpack levels at the end of the 3 platforming levels are far easier.
The ending fake out it a cruel trick to, only to pit you against a secret final boss that is much harder than the fake final boss.
This was the first time I’ve played a Jim Power game and I’m not impressed. Hopefully the 16-bit versions are decent.
