Low G-Man | All 3 endings NES playthrough | Original hardware | Deaths cut out
This is a full proper playthrough where you need to complete it 3 times in a row to get the best ending. The first playthrough was hard enough. Every level is incredibly difficult and you can’t beat it first time. I really had to go over and over each level until I was able to beat it. The bosses at the end don’t help either with the majority feeling like a lucked my way through.
Thing is unforgiving. Power ups are completely random so you are unlikely to have something good by the time you reach the boss. The red power up flask actually takes a unit of health from you and often I collected one without having time to move out of the way. You really don’t get much health either so being lucky with random drops is essential to beating some levels.
The way to beat enemies is to freeze them with the gun and then spear them from above or below. Some machines you can control if you beat them from above. This is useful for eating damage until it blows up. You can also do super high jumps in the machines which is not obvious at all but mandatory in some places. Luckily, I have the manual which tells you that you have to jump, then hold down when you land, then jump again as the machine is crouched. Not a control scheme I have seen before.
The last boss is of cause rock hard, but the only way I could do it was to play the full level and collect as much ammo as possible then die to store my ammo for the next life. You get 3 lives per continue so I would have to store 3 levels worth of ammo before giving it a proper shot. It was imperative to take out all of the guns first because those bubbles pretty much knock me into the pit every time they hit me. So, I needed special weapon to beat everything around the boss and then to beat the boss itself which isn’t always on the screen so beating him with the spear in a really tight time limit didn’t work for me. The time is very tight even with a full arsenal of ammo. I was super lucky on the second quest fight because I was given 2 extra lives to build up my ammo, and also got an invincibility power up so I could keep my ship from exploding a lot longer and take out the dangerous bubble guns from the sides.
This game is a real chore and took me many hours to play through, I’ve cut out all the deaths to stop this being a 10+ hour video. It may be a chore, but for some reason, I really like it. I can’t put my finger on why. I dread every upcoming level, the bosses annoy the crap out of me, but I can’t stop coming back for more punishment.
