Faceball | PC-Engine (TurboGrafx-16) playthrough | Real hardware
Faceball for Super CD-ROM2 system
I always wanted to play this game because the graphics looked nice but I never had any idea of how it plays. The game manual says that it is a digital game of tag. But really, it’s a 3D arena FPS. You choose a map and your character, then you go one on one, against a CPU or human player to reach the 5 kill count. You can even do 4 player split screen and add additional bots to make the game harder, but killing them doesn’t give you points.
There is a second mode called ‘Race’. You can choose one of the same 15 maps and instead of fighting, you collect items and bring them back to the base for points. The most items collected in the time frame, wins the most points.
The game is pretty customisable with the number of maps, and lots of bots and difficulty settings. But there isn’t any end game. This is multiplayer only. No final goal, or campaign. Just play for enjoyment.
Now this is the where the problem of the game lies. I couldn’t enjoy it because the controls are terrible. It’s so difficult to shoot at the enemy and the worse thing is that you can’t strafe, so the only way you can fight is by facing each other and hope your shots hit them more times than they hit you, because there is no dodging.
Once you kill the enemy, you can hide until your health replenishes, giving you even health to try again. It’s just not fun. It’s also very hard to tell where you are on the map. The walls are all the same and you can’t see in front of you far so you have to wait for the walls to pop up. At least there is a radar button so you know where the enemy is at all times. This can save a lot of frustration walking around a maze blind.
The characters look great, like moving emojis, but the 3D arenas are so bland and never change textures. I just didn’t find this game fun at all. Just frustrating shooting. I’m glad there wasn’t a campaign as I would have hated to go through that.
