Summary:
In 1983, Jimmy Snuka was one of the biggest babyface stars in all of wrestling. His infamous superfly splash off the steel cage inspired countless wrestlers including Mick Foley to pursue the profession. But while Snuka's in-ring career would be at an all-time high, his personal life would drag him down to the darkest depths.
How a 30 year cold case followed the tortured superstar until his final days.
In this Title Match Network exclusive, we'll show you the only existing interview where Jimmy Snuka is asked about the allegations that derailed his rumored WWF title run & ultimately shattered his career.
1983 looked like sky was the limit for Superfly Jimmy Snuka. He was married with 4 kids in North Carolina and was enjoying huge success in the WWF. On the side, Snuka began dating a young woman named Nancy Argentino. He was also heavily drinking and doing lots of coke, according to his former manager and wrestler Buddy Rogers.
Jan 1983, Snuka wound up in a brawl with 9 police officers and 2 police dogs. He was dragged to the cop car in his underwear & charged with assault on his girlfriend Nancy. Those charges would end up being dropped a few months later.
Fast-forward to May 10, 1983. Snuka was booked for the WWF in Allentown, PA. After arriving to the George Washington Motor Lodge, Snuka left Nancy in bed at headed for his match vs Jose Estrada.
After wrestling, he arrived back to the hotel where he called the front desk in a panic.
Just before 2am, Nancy Argentino would be gone. Snuka goes on to tell multiple versions of the incident.
In this exclusive interview we licensed from RF Video, Snuka is asked about what happened. It is the only recording that shows his reaction.
Snuka was back wrestling for WWF just 8 days after the incident.
Despite the coroner suspecting foul play. Despite the media coverage, Snuka was not charged.
Reports reveal that Vince McMahon met the authorities on June 1st, 1983. The investigation, while still open, would go cold for the next 30 years.
On-screen however fans would never know what was going on in Snuka's personal life. By Oct, 1983 he was making history in that legendary cage match vs Don Muraco. And it didn't stop in the new year either.
March 1984 -
Snuka would then enter a program wth Roddy Piper, it was a feud that proved to be the highlight of his career.
After his feud with Piper he easily one of the top babyfaces in WWF. But soon after things took a detour when when according to Snuka....
Later in 1985, Nancy's family would go on to win a 500k wrongful death suit against Snuka.
Now on TV, Snuka was still in the main event scene and he seemed like a shoe-in for a high-profile match at the first Wrestlemania...right?
March 31, 1985
Instead of match in the main event of Wrestlemania, Jimmy Snuka was booked ringside in the corner of Hulk Hogan & Mr. T.
By July 1985, Snuka was gone from WWF.
He went on to tour Japan and in 1986, Snuka headed to Minnesota for Verne Gagne's the AWA promotion. Snuka returned to WWF in 1989 but not at the main event level. After a memorable Wrestlemania 7 loss to the Undertaker, Snuka left to work the independents.
Nancy Argentino & her family finally saw some justice when the Superfly was charged in Sept 2015.
