Movie Description:
Red River is an American Western movie from 1948. It stars John Wayne and Montgomery Clift, and it was directed and produced by Howard Hawks. It tells a made-up story about the first cattle drive along the Chisholm Trail from Texas to Kansas. The drama comes from a growing fight over how to run the drive between Wayne, the Texas rancher who started it, and Clift, his adopted adult son.
Walt Brennan, Joanne Dru, Coleen Gray, Harry Carey, John Ireland, Hank Worden, Noah Beery Jr., Harry Carey Jr., and Paul Fix are some of the minor actors in the movie. Chase's original story, which was first published in 1946 as "Blazing Guns on the Chisholm Trail" in The Saturday Evening Post, was used as the basis for the script by Borden Chase and Charles Schnee.
When it came out, Red River did well at the box office and with critics. It was even nominated for two Academy Awards. Because Red River was "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant," the Library of Congress decided to preserve it in the US National Film Registry in 1990. In 2008, the American Film Institute (AFI) named Red River the fifth-best Western of all time on its 10 Top 10 list.
