Journey Speedrun - Any% NG+ in 44:42
5No commentary, this is simply the raw file I recorded of my attempt.
Q&A:
Why NG+ (New Game Plus)?
-NG+ allows me to use the White Cloak which makes it quite a bit faster to traverse in general. It lets me do what I have dubbed as "White Cloak Hopping."
White Cloak Hopping?
-White Cloak Hopping is basically holding forward while pressing down the X button. The White Cloak features an auto-regen scarf, and so when you land while doing the hop you recover just enough to propel yourself forward.
Any%?
-I skip a bunch of the symbols and all of the glyphs. I only get them if they aren't out of the way. In the slide level I attempt to get the third one in this run but completely fly over it. I try and jump back to it and ultimately ended up losing a bit of time to this. If/when I do this again (would like to do sub-44 which I highly believe is possible), I'll just skip it and focus on the actual slide.
Why Journey?
-It is an absolutely GORGEOUS game that anyone with a PS3 needs to go play now. One thing I love about this speed run (although it makes the timing annoying since they are the same length as some of the levels) is that I still get to see the awesome cutscenes :D
If I got a really good time, would I submit it somewhere?
-Only if I got a better capture software. What I have now isn't exactly optimal for recording speedruns (and having them being the wanted quality).
Specific Level Notes:
Intro:
End Time: 3:22.2
-As soon as I can I pause to hit the chapter select to boost me to the end of the level. I'm debating when I should grab the symbol on the main platform, especially if I have to go get the white cloak (Though I believe actually starting with the cloak is faster, as I did here). Otherwise, nothing notable happens here.
Bridge:
End Time: 6:18
-Simplest level unless I miss a jump, in which case I'd have to just reset. Biggest fear of missing the jump is from the 2nd to 3rd piece unless I get on a column (and even then it is a bit close for comfort).
Desert:
End Time: 11:03
-Fairly straightforward. Quite literally. I white cloak hop/slide my way in the general direction of the mountain. There's a skip I can do here involving riding a scarf dragon and jumping but I missed it. I also had to sit to regen my scarf a tad right below the exit :(.
Slide:
End Time: 16:17
Also fairly straightforward. I'm in a debate of when it is faster to jump and when it is faster to slide here still. Also, I completely derped up the last symbol but have decided I don't even need it.
Dragon:
End Time: 22:23
-Another level I'm in debate of the usefulness of grabbing a symbol, this time the first one. I'll probably test around with just skipping it and seeing how the next level goes. For the second dragon, I need to figure out if I have enough time before he appears to just bonzai. I waited in this attempt for him to pass by and then jumped through a window. Also need to align myself better for the 3rd symbol (or just figure out if I can skip it).
Tower:
End Time: 28:25
-Nothing major to note other than trying to jump up the tower right. I messed up right at the end and didn't time it right to get right up to near the top to make the major sequence break in the level. I didn't discover this sequence break but it's awesome when I actually pull it off :D
Snow:
End Time: 38:59
-The level of white cloak hopping and skiing. Need to figure out timing on the first wind part to see if that can be any faster. Also the dragon section is annoying but is pretty easy to wall hug while hopping.
Mountain:
End Time: 44:41.72 (44:42 rounded up)
-Lost nearly half a minute on this split amazingly! Pretty sure the point of lost time was when I was sequence breaking and ran out of cloak, lol. Nothing else notable besides me trying to figure where to actually hit the last split (when I lost control).
