The journey to the West is a comedy satire about a monkeys quest to immortality and redemption. At the same time, Journey to the West gleans some of the esoteric knowledge from the three primary religions of China (Confucianism, Daoism and Buddhism) and turns it into a digestible format that even children can take on.
Although the text is technically about the historical pilgrimage of Tang dynasty monk, Xuanzang, retrieving the Buddhists texts from India, the story is paralleled by the fictional journey of a god-like monkey going through the human experience of coming to knowledge about the nature of death and is thus spurred into action to try and cheat death.
This video uses the book to study the transcendent philosophies of ancient Chinese people and how a person may attain immortality which in China is considered the highest point of spiritual ascension.
