Whilst the first comparison that comes to mind would be the Italian mafia or the perhaps the Yakuza, the Triads are anything but your average thugs. The long and short of it is that they are a 250 year old secret society whose foundation is in esoteric spiritual practices and a devotion to the restoration of the Ming dynasty.
How exactly could such a strange and mysterious story be so unheard of before. Simple, very few western Sinologists have ventured deep into such a territory despite the fact such knowledge about this topic is widely available and popularized in pop culture in Taiwan and Hong Kong. This video is based on my readings of the two books (Gods Chinese Son and Search for Modern China) by in my opinion the most famed western Sinologist, Jonathan D Spence.
