Julius Caesar Was Captured By Pirates
In 75 BC, Cilician pirates seized 25-year-old Julius Caesar’s vessel, kidnapped, and held him for ransom. When the pirates told him that they had set his ransom at the sum of 20 talents, he laughed at them and suggested, that 50 talents would be a more appropriate amount. One Roman talent was approximately 71 pounds (32 kg), so the ransom was set at over 3,500 pounds (1,600 kg) of silver. At today’s price of silver, it would be over 1.1 million dollars. From time-to-time Julius would threaten to have all the pirates crucified after he’s released. The ransom was delivered after 38 days and Caesar went free. He raised a naval force and set out in pursuit of the pirates. He found the pirates and had them all crucified, just as he promised to them.
