Why Did Napoleon Hide His Hand?
Many of the most famous portraits of Napoleon portray him with one hand tucked out of sight, but why did he do that?
The hand-in-waistcoat is a gesture commonly found in portraits during the 18th and 19th centuries and also in mid-19th century photography. This pose was often associated with Napoleon Bonaparte, due to its use in many portraits made by his artist, Jacques-Louis David. The pose was used as a sign, that the sitter was from the upper class and often associated with nobility.
