Welcome to the Blackwood Mountain Cabin getaway! Ten friends are all alone in a mansion-sized cabin, what could possibly go wrong? Let’s find out shall we?
The game opens up with Jessica, Emily, and Mike playing an awful prank on Hannah. Sam, Hannah’s best friend is against it, and goes off to find her. The rest of the group leaves to set up the prank. After Hannah arrives in the room where Mike is, the game cuts to Hannah’s twin, Beth, and gives you control.
The game takes this prologue to teach you all the controls and how decisions work. Any object that shines is interactive. This is how you find clues and collectibles throughout the game. Pick up the note on the counter to see exactly what the prank is. When Beth realizes the gang is playing with her “naive sister’s” emotions, she gears up to swoop in and save her.
Walk next to the sleeping bodies on the other end of the counter. Pick up the bottle next to one of them and inspect it. Once you do, the game will cut back and the prank on Hannah will unfold. Hannah runs outside to get away from everyone.
The game will now introduce the choice system in the game. For the first choice, you need to decide whether or not to wake Josh or to run outside. No matter what, you end up outside and chase after Hannah. When you need to pick a path, either way works. The shortcut or the safe path will take Beth to her sister.
Once you have the cellphone flashlight out, follow the path forward. After a deer hops out and runs past you, the first collectible will be nearby. At the end of the path, you will see an object that shines when you light hits it. Walk up and interact with it. This is a Totem, and the first one in the game. Specifically, this is a Death Totem. After looking at the totem’s glimpse into the future, continue up the path to find Hannah.
Something spooky is in the woods. Hannah and Beth run for it only to be caught on the edge of a cliff.
Now you get to decide if you let go of Hannah or drop down together to escape the pyromaniac-looking person reaching out for you. After making your choice, the twins fate will be revealed and the mystery begins. Can you survive until dawn?
Now it’s time for your first session with The Analyst. At the end of each chapter you will see The Analyst and have a chat. You may answer his questions however you would like for this session. When the sessions ends, the opening credits roll. Welcome to Until Dawn.
One year after Hannah and Beth’s disappearance is upon the group of friends. Josh has invited everyone back to the mountain to find closure and party. Sam arrives on a bus and needs to get up to the lodge. Follow the path toward the main gate. Unfortunately, the gate is locked up. Look to the left and climb up the wall. Pick your route up and hit the correct buttons in the quick time event (QTE).
On the other side of the fence, head forward to find a squirrel. The game takes this little animal as an opportunity to teach you a new mechanic. Keep the controller still to prevent your character from moving. You do not need the PlayStation Camera for this feature. Interact with the squirrel and then continue down the path.
Before the turn in the path, there is a sign educating folks about Native Americans and symbols related to the totems. Read the sign and then interact with the Guidance Totem to move on.
Now at the cable car station, head under the awning to find Chris' open backpack. This is the first Butterfly Effect decision in the game. Your choice here will have some effect on the narrative and the relationships between the group. This decision will have an impact on Chris and Sam’s relationship.
After your introduction to Chris and one of the results of your choice, follow Chris behind the cable car station. Make sure you look on the side of the station for the first Mystery Man Clue, which is a Wanted Poster. Behind the station, Chris found a gun and wanted to show Sam his marksman skills. Complete the tutorial for the shooting mechanics in the game. Another Butterfly Effect decision is upon you.
