Junkyard Simulator playthrough Part 01 Tutorials and early missions
It's finally here! This is my most-anticipated games of all time (seriously, Fallout 4, Cyberpunk 2077 or King's Bounty 2 can't stand a chance:P) – Junkyard Simulator by the emperor of all simulation games: PlayWay seated in Poland. The game was released on 13 October 2021 and I purchased it immediately to play through the beginning or all the introductory quests in one sitting. Unfortunately, the story and quests in the game are presented in such a simplistic manner that it is hard to decide whether the game still has something new to offer (as an extended prologue) so I ended up playing for 4 hours straight... until I decided that I will need much more time to buy the next upgrade.
So far, Junkyard Simulator (despite being an early access game) has proven to be one of the most ambitious projects published by PlayWay in terms of the number of mechanics or features. Here's my list of pros and cons of the game at this stage of development:
Pros:
- a real time-killer! If you need to relax or wish to play a 100% casual title, this is the game for you;
- the container feature is very entertaining; I think I will spend most of the time later in the game just buying more and more containers to scavenge through all the loot; this feature has been though-out very well;
- the graphics are great for a simulator BUT you need to fiddle around the settings because in my first attempt to record the game I experienced major tearing and FPS drops; I recommend switching off V-sync;
- the quest system is very basic but, in my opinion, sufficient for this type of game.
Cons:
- although it seems that the devs worked on the driving mechanics, it is still very basic and clunky; the best way to describe driving a truck here is to compare it to pushing a brick on ice. At times, you feel that your truck has some weight, but once you gain momentum, it feels like driving a toy car. However, I really like maneouvering in tight spots, like trying to reach the container near the main workshop;
- minor bugs here and there, mind you that you'll encounter typos, bits of text in Polish (even with grammar errors...), but I haven't encountered anything game-breaking; HOWEVER, I do not recommend trying to parkour too much, you can get stuck easily and you'll need to willy-nilly yourself out or load your previous save;
- if you get a heart attack whenever you see 59 FPS instead of 60, do not buy this game:P
- the minimap is a mess. Period.
My suggestions or things I'd love to see later on in the game:
- although the inventory based system is not as bad as I thought it would be, it is still very inconvenient and ruins all the fun of scavenging - you can carry 4 huge engines or 4 plastic bottles, kinda illogical, don't you think? I think that a weight-based system, both for the player inventory and the vehicles, would be MUCH better;
- having a possibility to buy and place more trash bins to recycle stuff would be cool;
- it would be nice to have more space for permanent storage; in the game, there are many large containers at random places, it would be awesome to put stuff you picked up in the vicinity into such a container just to drive your vehicle there at some point and load the goods;
- more interactable/sellable junk - there are many assets that serve just for decoration, but it would be great to have the option of picking it all up to sell it at the scrap market - at least for the workshop, to clean it a bit up;
- so, my other suggestion is kind of connected: having an option to customize your workshop, maybe with something like that think in House Flipper that you can sell decorations/stationaries and then buy other assets and decorations and place it anywhere you like;
- a game mode (maybe ng+, end-game content) to completely clean areas, with no respawns, pick up all the junk, etc.
- post-game content like infinite/huge storage capaciy in vehicles, e.g. for several million bucks;
- more thinks giving you exp, more levels and more interesting skills;
- a complete overhaul of car stripping/scrapping: it would be awesome to have the chance to just visit the huge junkyard and pick up ANY wreck out there, clear certain areas by picking up non-respawnable wrecks, strip ANY vehicle at your workshop for money and then crush the chassis - this is by far a feature that I would be most forward looking to :)
To sum up, it is a very entertaining game and I hope it will thrive and develop during the early access period!
