Fall of the New Age Collector's Edition full game playthrough (including Extra story)
It's been a long time since I last played a hidden objects game, although I really am a fan of this genre. As a short break from long and complex games, I decided to dig deep into my Steam library and managed to find this gem.
Fall of the New Age Collector's Edition is a title developed by Shaman Games Studio. You play as Maria, a young thief who during one of their heists gets involved in a serious plot with the fate of the whole kingdom at stake. She discovers a secret demonic cult that performs human sacrifices. To add to the cliche list, her young brother gets kidnapped by the cultists to serve as their next victim. You end up in jail, yet suddenly receive help from a mysterious ally – Herbert, a former secret agent of the king and, of course, an old friend of Maria's father.
Okay, the plot seems pretty sophisticated for a hidden objects game and it is presented in a cheeky way with poor lip synch and mediocre voice acting (though it is a common feature in most HO games). Still, it has several mechanics that are unique and really surprised me: in order to unlock a hidden objects scene, you must first find a code/password/item list (explained somehow by the plot) and only then you will be able to play through the scene; it also has a lockpicking mechanic, something like a poor version of the minigame found in Skyrim. Finally, some of the puzzles can be really challenging. Throughout the game, I struggled two or three times to find the correct solution. All those elements combined with the intense plot make a solid game that I finished in one sitting (and mind you this is a pretty long game, about 1 hour longer than your usual title from this genre).
However, I have several minor complaints. First of all, some of the puzzles need an instruction (or maybe they have, but the highest difficulty does not show them) because you either need great intuition or find out what to do by trial and error. Second of all, there are many minigames, but very few actual hidden objects scenes, so if you really want to play this strictly for the HO experience, you might feel disappointed. The last weak side I would like to point out are the rushed endings. The rest of the cutscenes is paced and elaborate, while the ending of the basic game and of the bonus adventure feel as if the devs did not have the time to add at least 10 more seconds of footage and had to squeeze all the plot elements into a fast sequence (including a cliffhanger) that ends abruptly leaving the player with no sensation of achievement.
Apart from that, this is a decent casual game!
