K2-18b has dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in its atmosphere, detected by the James Webb Space Telescope. On Earth, DMS and its cousin dimethyl disulfide is mainly produced by marine life like phytoplankton, but scientists aren't sure if that's the case on K2-18b there could be other unknown processes at work 🌊
Scientists also managed to produce dimethyl sulfide on earth by Photochemical reactions, Surface chemistry and Gas phase reactions.
So even tho DMS is a strong bio signature on earth its presence on k2-18B could be due to unique chemistry happening not just life.
But why scientists still Get exited about dms despite these possibilities?
Because, on Earth, DMS is only made by living things mainly marine microbes so it's a strong biosignature candidate. Even though we've now found DMS can be made without life (like on comets or in interstellar clouds), finding it in large amounts on a planet with a suitable atmosphere could still hint at life, especially if other signs also point that way. 🧬
