With the Kalash site surveyed, the crew of the Kapisi prepares shipbreaking operations to recover the much needed salvage from the ship wreck.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is set on Kharak 100 years before the events of Homeworld. It charts the progress of a military expedition led by Rachel S'jet (an ancestor of Karan S'jet), sent into the southern deserts of Kharak after an orbital satellite discovers an anomaly.

The anomaly, the Jaraci Object, is believed to hold the key to the survival of the Northern Kiithid, whose lands are encroached upon by the desert every passing year. Their coalition sends an expedition in the form of the Command Carrier Kapisi, and must enter into conflict with the zealots of Kiith Gaalsien, whose laws condemn the Northern Kiithid for their expansion into space. It is up to the crew of the Kapisi to reach the Jaraci Object before the North falls to the Gaalsien crusade.
