Time for a random game!

Kaze Kiri: Ninja Action is a single player only side scrolling ninja action/hack and slash game for the PC Engine released in 1994 and was developed and published by Naxat Soft. The game was only released in Japan. The player takes on the role of two protagonists: Kaze Kiri, a brave young ninja and Suzu, a beautiful, agile kunoichi.

Gameplay is typical of most side scrolling action games. Players move from left to right (in some stages, from right to left) defeating various enemies and eventually facing off against an end level boss. In addition, an added feature of this game is that there is an enemy counter at the top right, where a certain number of enemies must be defeated in order for the boss to appear. In later stages, the number of defeated enemies tally gets higher, with more enemies needing to be fought and beaten to move on.

Kaze and Suzu attack move set include a slash attack combo, a ninja projectile, a dive kick, a sliding kick, a pretty neat backflip evasion move, and a vanish ninja arts move, which is very useful, especially against certain bosses.

The games take place in Feudal Japan. The beautiful Princess Shizu (Shizuhime) has been kidnapped by the evil ninja leader Genbu and taken to the power mad warlord Hiei to be his bride. It falls upon Kaze and Suzu to infiltrate Hiei Castle and rescue Shizu. But, the mission will not be easy, as many of Hiei's ninja army stand in the way. Even worse are Genbu's generals, who armed with weapons and skilled in the ninja dark arts also await to thwart our heroes mission.

Here, I do a full playthrough as Suzu (she can only be unlocked when you play through the game once on any difficulty).

This game is really fun and neat to play. Cons are that the game can get a bit repetitive in some parts and certain enemy hitboxes are weird. Pros are the amazing opening and closing animation sequence, the music is pretty great, non stop action, and pretty cool boss fights (bosses have that Ninja Scroll feel about them). I hope someday this gets an English translation.

I would definitely highly recommend this to any fan of side scrolling action video games. Indeed, an underrated and obscure PC Engine gem of a game that all fans of rare and obscure video games should check out.
