Alex does her best to seal the breach.
--
The story so far:
Alex takes her new step-brother Jonas along for a night of mischief with her best friend Ren, to Edwards Island - a former military base. There, they meet up with Clarissa and Nona, who seem frankly disappointed to see them.
The island is said to contain some strange radio interference, so the teenagers have brought a radio along to try and tune in to frequencies that is said to "not exist".
When Jonas enters a cave where Alex's radio has triggered some strange sounds, Alex follows. And deep in the cave, the two of them tune in to seemingly open a portal to another dimension.
An hour later, they wake up at the island's comm tower, not knowing how they got there. They make contact with Ren, who is at a relay station in the woods. He sounds like he's in trouble, so Alex and Jonas decide to go find him.
However, on their way they stumble into a glitch that makes Alex realise they are repeating a small period of time over, and over again. And it looks like they are being haunted by ghosts.
Once they meet up with Ren, they experience another time loop, and they witness Ren being possessed by the ghosts. Alex uses her radio to free Ren from his paralysis, and they decide to meet back at the comm tower, once Alex and Jonas are able to find Clarissa and Nona.
While Alex and Jonas search for Clarissa at the decommissioned army outpost, they are tested by the voices, who reveal themselves to be the ghosts of the United States Submarine Kanaloa. They take hold of Clarissa, and seemingly drive her to take her own life.
The tension between the teenagers grow as the drama escalates. Jonas reveals trust issues with the group, and the teenagers disagree whether it's a good idea to try to leave before they find Clarissa.
Ren believes there is a boat at Margaret Adler's estate, which they can use to get off the island. But in order to access the mansion, they need a key to the gate, back at the port main street.
With a new WAL radio in Alex's inventory, the group gains the ability to open doors locked with frequency locks. Before they can reach the Adler estate, however, Alex is transported back in time through a vision, where she talks to her dead brother, Michael. She tells him that if he really likes Clarissa, they should be together.
Once the vision ends, Alex and Nona meet up with Jonas and Ren at the Adler estate, where they hope to find the boat to leave the island. But before they find the keys, the ghosts take hold of Clarissa once again, and put Alex through another "game".
The teenagers learn from a series of slides that Maggie Adler knew about the ghosts, and in order to seal the breach between "their" world and ours, you have to cross over. In order to get back to the cave, the kids find out that they have to go through an old fallout shelter. But to unlock it, they have to override the island's security system.
Before they are able to get that far, though, the ghosts reappear and try to strike a deal with Alex, for Clarissa's soul.

Oxenfree is a dialogue-heavy adventure with horror elements by Night School Studios. Oxenfree follows the teenage girl Alex, and is played from a 2.5D perspective. Instead of dialogue occurring during cutscenes, speech bubbles appear over Alex's head, allowing the player able to choose what she says next in the conversation while also interacting with the game's world. Puzzles in the game are solved by finding the correct frequency on Alex's handheld radio, which can do everything from unlock doors to communicate with ghosts.
Oxenfree is available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
