The Story:
In "Kena: Bridge of Spirits," spirit guide Kena helps trapped spirits move on in a world where the deceased linger due to trauma. She collects companions called the Rot and confronts a masked spirit causing corruption. Kena aids spirits like Taro, Saiya, and Beni, resolving their past and helping them move on. Along the way, she assists villagers Adira and Hana, uncovering the village's tragic history. In her quest to reach the Mountain Shrine, Kena faces Toshi, the source of corruption, and ultimately helps him find peace. The game concludes with Kena restoring the spirit of the Rot God.

The Gameplay:
To me, it's a fluid experience when traversing the area, searching for hidden Rots, handling mail deliveries, and accessing various upgrades. You'll have early access to double jump, unlike other platforming games where you need to discover or unlock it. Transitioning to battle is similarly smooth, featuring fast-paced hack-and-slash combat. In the early to mid-game, you'll gain the ability to shoot arrows using just your staff. A slow-motion effect always triggers when you're airborne and shooting arrows.

Moving on to the mid-game, you'll have access to your spirit bomb, and you can trigger it by shooting it with an arrow or by releasing your spirit shields. In the mid to late-game, you'll acquire a dash ability, although you'll need to press two buttons to trigger it. Additionally, it inflicts damage on your enemies if you dash towards them.

The Rots amplify your damage upon pressing a button while charging any attack, and the damage increases as you collect more Rots.

The Exploration:
As mentioned, you'll have access to the double jump at the start of the game to aid you in your early exploration. There are numerous secret areas on the map, and the map itself is vast, so having a double jump is particularly useful for now. As you progress through the game, you can revisit areas using teleportation or warp altars. These altars are identifiable by a blue-flamed candle and a bell; approaching them enables their teleportation function. Honestly, there are times when I forget I can warp from one area to another because the environment is so beautiful and scenic (especially after freeing an area from its corruption). Consequently, I often traverse from point A to point B just to relish the scenic views.

In certain areas, there are flowers that bloom. If you're in a specific spot, you can shoot an arrow at them to hook onto from your current position. The hook automatically pulls you quickly. Looking up at some trees, there are these embedded blue crystals in them where you'll have to shoot arrows at them and then follow a light trail to shoot the next one. You can use the Taro's mask to see the trails early on and position yourself to shoot all of those crystals in a single position, though sometimes this will not be the case. Speaking of Taro's, you can use this mask to reveal treasures and Rot footprints. Though you cannot walk while wearing it, you'll have to stop and then look around for hidden Rots and treasures.

Replayability:
Yes, definitely. I do plan on returning to this game for completion.

My Rating: 8/10
