You find yourself far to out, with too little deltaV to get back confidently without burning up. Here is a simple guide to understanding Aerobraking(what I referred to as 'gravity skip') on Kerbin:
Velocity greater than 3000 m/s-------Aerobrake at ~55,000meter and higher
Velocity greater than 2300 m/s-------Aerobrake at ~45,000 meters and higher
having even a small ablator saves your kermin from the worst
