When looking at illustrations from the Middle Ages, be prepared for some freaky stuff... Knights fighting giant snails, bizarre animals that would be right at home in an LSD trip, phallic trees and headless duelists are just a few of the strangest images.

People back then definitely had a sense of humor, and in some cases quite an odd one (at least by our standards). And apparently they weren't too worried about wasting paper or parchment and hours of drawing on something as crude as a monkey sticking a fish up its ass (no, I'm not making that up).
