I'm kind of baffled as to why this game is not more well regarded. First of all the game is drop dead gorgeous. The environments vary from lush city-scapes, to derelict undergrounds, to outer space and each environment had me in awe. The game at this point is 8 years old and the graphics hold up amazingly well. Most missions offer some variety in how you can approach you objectives and which order to do them, which is new for the series. Exploration plays a much larger part in Shadow Fall than any of the other previous entries. It really feels like they were trying to reboot the series and take it in a new direction. Everything feels slightly tweaked or even brand new like the owl. The owl is your new drone companion and it offers some neat skills to help mitigate enemy encounters. For the most part you are on your own, which is another change of pace, considering most games you had at least one party member going around with you. The drone sort of makes up for it. There is another NPC that does help every once in a while, but it is rare. There is a ton of variety to what you need to do in each mission and keeps the game feeling fresh. The combat is extremely fast paced and while you can only carry just two guns it rarely felt that it was limiting. I'm not sure why you can't just carry one more. Killzone 3 added a third gun back to the repertoire and Shadow Fall removed it again. The plus is that your standard gun is not a useless pistol and your automatic rifle actually serves a purpose. The story kind of finishes off what was started in the original trilogy, but also opens up some new story threads. It's a shame Sony has decided to retire the series because I would have loved to see where Guerilla was taking the series. Hell, even if Guerilla didn't continue the franchise and let another studio take over, I just want more Killzone to be perfectly honest. It's a shame that the series seemingly ended prematurely. Hard difficulty offered up a decent challenge, but nothing nearly as bad as Killzone 2 and I can appreciate that. The endgame certainly ramps up the difficulty by throwing the kitchen sink at you, but it's does feel worth it. My biggest disappointment is that the end seemed very abrupt. Things were really ramping up and the game ended with a whimper rather than a bang. Enjoy my playthrough.
