What’s up everyone I hope you all had a good week. This week we are checking out Kingdom Two Crowns as an indie game I recommend you check out. This unassuming game has actually been on my Xbox for some time now. I’ve started it multiple times in the past but not until recently did it really get a hold of me. I didn’t know this back when I first got the game and I’m not sure how long this has been a thing but the game is made by PlayFab, and if you create a PlayFab account, you can take your game with you on the go. I now have my game both on my Xbox and on my Android, though it is available on iOS as well. You should note however that you will have to buy the game again on your mobile phone (or tablet) of choice to get the cross-platform saves and gameplay to work. All that said, I now keep coming back to Kingdom Two Crowns and continue playing it when I’m out and about or when I lay in bed just before I go to sleep.

So you’re probably asking yourself, “why is this game so special?”. Right? Well, for that I really need to explain the gameplay loop of the game. Kingdom Two Crowns is a side-scrolling, pixelated, strategy game where you play as a king or queen of barren land. Mounted on your trusty steed it’s up to you to gather the people of the land, bring them together and have them work as a community in order to revive the land and keep the enemy away.

At the start of your adventure, you start out with little money and few people. As you assign them roles they begin to work as hunters or builders to help fix and spread the kingdom. These workers will make money for doing things like cutting down trees, building fences, and hunting, all of which return to you and the kingdom. You then take that money and reinvest it into your kingdom while upgrading your town's defenses and unlocking new roles for your community to take.

Beware of the evil that lurks in the night, however. At night, dark portals will open up and unleash “The Greed” an enemy with no face and a strong desire to kill, pillage, and wreck the land you’ve started to rebuild. The Greed can be taken out, but at what cost? How many times will you have to mend your defenses? How many citizens will they capture and take? Will they overwhelm you and take the crown? That all depends on how well you manage your community.

The gameplay loop is pretty simple. Do as much expanding and fortifying as you can during the day and ready your defenses at night. It seems pretty simple but the slow pace at the start of the game can lead you to make dumb choices and end your run before it even begins. AND YES!!! I have to say this. This game can seem like a bore when first starting out and even now that you’re watching gameplay it may turn you off to the idea of picking it up but let me also tell you that there are pretty awesome things to find if you’re into strategy game like this.

There are different types of mounts you can unlock that will allow you to do things like travel faster. Some mounts even have special abilities that allow you to make more money or lure wildland creatures to your mount, which allows you to bring them back to town for food and hides while also giving you more money to reinvest into your kingdom. There are special townsfolk that will allow you to build better walls and stronger archers. There are treasures to be found out in the wild if you’re willing to tempt fate and travel out being careful The Greed doesn’t catch up with you.

Eventually, after building up your first kingdom you can build a ship and fill it with some of your citizens and venture out to other unknown lands to continue to expand and find new resources you can eventually bring back to the lands you’ve already built up. Be careful not to take too many people with you though as the land you leave will break down and eventually rot in your absence.

Now listen, I haven’t gotten far into Kingdom Two Crowns. I don’t know what the end game is. I don’t know if I’ll ever see the actual ending to the game. What I do know is that while the game is a slow start, all the things you can do in this game keep me coming back and trying to expand further and further into it. So if this sounds like a game you might enjoy, pick it up. You can get it for $19.99 on all gaming platforms and for $6.99 on Android or iOS.
