Down to this very day, my dad and I genuinely love to play Mario Kart 64 together. As a result of essentially a lifetime of playing it, the theme for the Block Fort and Double Deck battle arenas (more famously the song for the "Choco Mountain" track, thus the theme of this video) is deeply ingrained in my subconscious, as they were our favorite levels for Battle mode. The song itself is SUCH a fun time to play on piano! I had a blast putting together this arrangement; it's for the most part very faithful to the original with a few rhythmic discrepancies here and there.

The beginning of the arrangement features a fun chromatic dominant-9sus4 chord pattern, which is the progression commonly featured in many of the iconic start-up themes for races throughout the Mario Kart series (at least I think so; it's just now dawning on me that I never actually bothered to double-check that lol). The actual bulk of the song presents itself as a great example of that “boom-chick” pattern featured in the left hand and occasionally some fun walking-bass parts, simulating a sort of folk/bluegrass style bass. The right hand part lent itself to some incredibly fun grace note techniques, especially that satisfying octave jump featured in the “chorus” (1:48); I was happy with how that part as well as the entire rest of the song translated really well to piano! I also through in the Starman theme at 1:39 since it seemed to fit very nicely with that whole-step progression. Besides that, there's not really much else to talk about besides MY GOSH it is an absolute work out for that left-hand!!! You can really sense my exhaustion at the end there (I did the whole thing in one take, which is rare for me)!

That's all for now; until next time, goodbye!
