Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards was a very late entry on the N64 and the first 3D Kirby game. The big selling feature that was never replicated again was the ability to combine powers to create all-new abilities for Kirby. The pink puffball runs along a 2.5D path with 3D objects and environments to help the fairy Ribbon of planet Ripple Star re-assemble the Crystal Shards that Dark Matter shattered and is after. Kirby and Ribbon must recruit help from Waddle Dee, Adeleine the painter, and King Dedede to win the day. The game itself is very short and has limited controls in retrospect, but the late game presents some challenges to help it not be a total breeze. For many, this game holds a special place and earns nostalgia points, but I'd say aside from the cool combinations, it is far from the best Kirby game, especially going back to it now. This first episode, we complete Pop Star and the first stage of Rock Star. I will be collecting all of the shards.
