A playthrough of Nintendo's 1995 platformer for the Nintendo Game Boy, Kirby's Dream Land 2.

This video was recorded using the Super Game Boy. It shows the best ending (achieved by finding all seven rainbow drops) and a full 100% completion rate.

Following Kirby's Dream Land (Game Boy, 1992) and Kirby's Adventure (NES, 1993), Kirby's Dream Land 2 was the third platformer to be released in the series, but it is the direct sequel to the first game.

Kirby's Dream Land 2 represents a solid step forward from Kirby's Adventure. It incorporates Adventure's ability-absorb mechanics, and further ups the ante with a host of cutesy animal friends, each of whom have a unique take on each of Kirby's absorb abilities when ridden, injecting a fair amount of substance into the platforming puzzles, and a lot of diversity into Kirby's attack repertoire. Combine that with the well-utilized Super Game Boy features (color and some digital sound effects), and you have a game that impresses on the Game Boy just as much as Kirby's Adventure did on the NES.

It's lengthier and harder than Kirby's original trip to the monochrome Dream Land, which only lasted about thirty minutes and could be beaten with virtually zero effort. I can't deny, though, that I prefer the first one over both the NES game and the GB sequel. It's much simpler and more straightforward, but I find it more fun. This one is very good, and there's no question that it capably upholds the standards that the series is known for. It just never scratched the platformer itch for me as well as Kirby's first outing did.

The graphics are excellent on the standard Game Boy, and are even better on the Super Game Boy. It doesn't manage to quite match Donkey Kong '94 in how it uses the SNES add-on's features, but the stages colored by theme look super cheerful and clean, and the enhanced sounds (like the wind) sound awesome. I was also particularly impressed with how the ending made use of so much color - you know somebody was showing off their skills with that rainbow shot!

If you like platformers and the Game Boy, you really can't go wrong here, and despite being 25 years old, the game will immediately feel familiar to anyone that has played any Kirby platformer, including the more recent ones.

It's also stupidly cute, if you enjoy that in your games. Kirby riding a hamster seems to have been designed for the sole purpose of making you go "awwww."
