Knee Deep in the Strogg (Quake 4)

I replay through one of Raven Software's several contributions to the id software library, the almost-20-year-old Quake 4. This time I tried Lieutenant difficulty, mostly quite manageable apart from a particularly hairy fight against the game's strongest enemies just prior to the final boss. Regarded with mixed feelings by some due to things like its relatively slow player movement and appeal to neither fans of Quake 1 nor 3, I enjoyed its weapon feel, vehicle sections and its sense of scope, the sensation throughout much of the early game that you are in a large scale war, contrasting the isolation and atmospheric dread of Doom 3. The presence of NPC medics and engineers that would heal you and repair your armor was much appreciated. It's an example of what was good about 2000s "pipe shooters."
