Sharpened knife* Cutting board
Onion, peeled
Instructions

1. Peel the onion and cut it in half through the root.
2. Set one half of the onion on the board with its flat side down and the root facing away from you.
Grip the knife with your middle, ring and pinky fingers around the handle. Clasp your thumb and forefinger on each side of the blade's base to control cutting. Curl the fingertips of your other hand on top of the onion to keep it in place.4. Lift the knife off the board and make parallel cuts into the onion by pulling the blade downward and backward repeatedly. Be sure to keep the tip of the blade close to the root without cutting through it. The uncut root will hold the onion slices together.
5. If the onion is large in diameter, cut it in half by slicing through it with the knife held parallel to the board. Do not split the root just yet, as it will hold the rest of the onion together. As you hold the onion down, be sure not to press too firmly and pinch the blade so that you may slice fluidly.
6. Now you can make perpendicular cuts the same width as your previous ones. The onion dices will now be freed from the root.
7. As the blade gets closer to the root and your fingertips, turn the remaining onion on its freshly cut side. Make more parallel cuts by pulling the blade downward and backward repeatedly.
8. Repeat the above steps with the other half of the onion.
