Kikka the Steadfast and her companion Bemelle find themselves with no choice but to take the direct route over the cursed lake Sinnlos to rescue a village under siege by raiders. However, the journey over the lake is fraught with danger. The pitch-black waters are home to the Nixi; twisted creatures with the frantic desire to drag humans into the depths and drown them.
In order to make the journey safely, they must enlist the help of a standoffish, nameless guide to show them the way over the endless span of cursed bridges that rise from the depths when night falls. But they find they aren't the only ones looking to make the journey. And the guide warns them that a group this big has no chance of making it across whole.
Because anyone can be saved, but not everyone can be.
