Leah Remini exposes Scientology's dark secrets
Actress Leah Remini, a former Scientologist and vocal critic of the controversial religion, offered her condolences upon the passing of fellow actress and notable Scientologist Kirstie Alley. Remini and Alley had a long-standing feud over Alley's commitment to Scientology.
The Church of Scientology is a religious organization founded by L. Ron Hubbard in 1954. It is based on Hubbard's ideas and teachings, which are outlined in his book Dianetics. Scientology is known for its secretive nature and has been criticized for its controversial practices and beliefs. Some notable members of the church include Tom Cruise and John Travolta.
Remini publicly left Scientology in 2013 and has since become a leading voice against the organization. She has claimed on multiple occasions that those who leave the church are retaliated against by members, which Alley rebuked during an interview with Howard Stern. Alley's children, both Scientologists, announced her passing at the age of 71 following a brief battle with colon cancer.
Alley was famously a longtime devotee of the controversial religion, becoming a member in 1979 when she was new to Los Angeles and had a cocaine habit she needed assistance kicking. She enrolled at a Narconon center, which is part of the church of Scientology's rehab network, and quit the drug cold turkey. She publicly credited Dianetics, the book by church founder L. Ron Hubbard, with ending her addiction.
Unlike some famous members of the church, including her longtime friend John Travolta and Tom Cruise, Alley was willing to feud publicly with detractors of the religious institution, including Remini. She added that she blocked Remini on Twitter "because she's a bigot!"
Eventually, the pair's feud got in the way of other Hollywood relationships, including Alley's with her former Dancing with the Stars partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who became friends with Remini when she went on the show in 2014. Chmerkovskiy reported that Alley cut ties with him when Remini was on the show.
In a statement to Rolling Stone, Remini said, "The news of Kirstie Alley's passing is very sad. Although Scientologists donβt believe in prayers, my prayers do go out to her two children, who are now without their mom. I hope they can, one day, free themselves of this dangerous and toxic organization."
Alley's passing has reignited discussions about the controversial practices and beliefs of the Church of Scientology. The organization has long been criticized for its secretive nature and allegations of abuse towards its members. Remini has been a vocal critic of the organization, even hosting a documentary series called "Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath."
