70Tonight we kick off our brand-new Learn How to STOL series — a hands-on, educational look into the world of Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) flying in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.
In Part 1, we’ll lay the groundwork for what makes STOL so rewarding and challenging. From defining what STOL actually is to understanding the bush pilot environment, this episode builds the foundation for everything to come.
We’ll be flying from Goodspeed Airfield (42B), exploring performance, environment, and aircraft technique — joined by oohcando, who’ll share real-world bush flying insights and tips for operating safely in rugged terrain.
What We’ll Cover
Module 1 – Introduction to STOL
• What STOL is — and what it isn’t
• How it evolved through history and real-world applications
• Why it’s an essential skill in flight simulation
• Aircraft that excel at STOL and how they differ
Module 2 – The Bush Pilot Environment
• Where to fly: Alaska, Idaho backcountry, Papua New Guinea, the Outback, the Alps, and more
• How terrain, wind, slope, and surface type affect performance
• Understanding Density Altitude (DA) — and why “hot + high = poor performance”
• How to scout and assess a landing strip safely before committing
