Hard Drive Navigation
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Everything that is on your computer is stored in the hard drive. Windows Explorer is what Windows uses to navigate the hard drive.
To access Windows Explorer, you can click the Start button at the bottom left of the Taskbar and type "C:" in the search field. Alternatively, you can select the Computer button in the Start menu then click on the hard drive icon.
This will prompt a list of folders that have been installed through the operating system or other programs. Think of the hard drive as a library and the Start menu as the card catalogue system inside the library that references where things are. From viewing the main drive, you can see Program Files and Program Files (x86).
Here is where all of your installed programs will be. Windows, Users and Temp are listed below these. You should not cut, move or delete anything from this location. Deleting programs from this directory will not uninstall a program. Doing this could cause programs or the operating system to stop working and require a reinstall.
If you would like to modify files or programs, do so from the Desktop and Document folders, as this is where most of your user content will be located. At the top of Windows Explorer are two arrows at the left of the address bar. These arrows allow you to change the directories if you click on them. Just to the left of this is the back and forward navigation buttons. If you would like to see the full address of your location, just click on the folder icon to the left of the address bar.
If you want to view files in an easier manner, just click on the change view arrow at the upper-right corner of the window. This will prompt a small window in which you can change how the files are arranged (large, small, listed, tiled, etc.).
Next to the change view button is the preview pane button. This works well if you have small icons and want to preview each one. By clicking on a file within the list, a small preview image will be displayed within this pane.
This is helpful if you are searching through photos that have not yet been clearly labeled to see which is which. At the bottom of the screen is where you will find details on the file you have selected. In the case of photos, such details include: size, date taken and dimensions.
