Learn With Pokémon: Typing Adventure (DS) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
203A playthrough of Nintendo's 2012 typing game for the Nintendo DS, Learn With Pokémon: Typing Adventure.
Even among the massive, diverse range of Pokémon spin-offs, Learn With Pokémon: Typing Adventure ("Battle & Get! Pokémon Typing" in Japan) is an odd duck. Not only does it require the included Bluetooth keyboard to play, but it is the only Pokémon title with an official English release to not be sold in North America.
In the English version, you play as a research assistant to Dr. Quentin Werty (get it?) alongside his first, and thoroughly inept, assistant Paige Down. The doctor needs your help in collecting data on as many of the 403 included Pokémon as possible.
I captured a total of 353 of them in this playthrough. At 2:16:16 I go though the entire Pokédex so you can see which I captured over the course of the game.
To accomplish this task, you charge into the wilds armed with your keyboard, typing the names of any Pokémon that appear before you. The first set of training levels will only ask you to type the first couple of letters of their names, but before too long the training wheels will come off and you'll have to type the full names in. By the time you near the end, the game will expect you to know the Pokémon by heart: you'll need to type them in correctly from memory (argh... the spelling of some of these things!) at a moment's notice since the on-screen prompts appear far too late to be regularly relied on. If you know every creature on sight or by sound, you'll do well. If you don't, like me, it'll take several playthroughs before you're familiar enough to get decent scores.
If you love everything Pokémon, or if you're the sort of person that enjoys games like Pokémon Snap, I think you'll probably get a real kick out of Learn With Pokémon: Typing Adventure. The graphics are bright and friendly, the music is catchy, and the game's setup is pretty standard for the series.
I'm not sure how much it really can teach you about typing, though, since the main game never asks you to type anything but endless lists of Pokémon names. The only real similarly between it and games like Mario Teaches Typing or The Typing of the Dead is that they all require a keyboard.
But if you're one of the many Pokéfans out there, you'll probably be smiling the entire time you play it.
(Since I don't have a DS system that I can capture video from, this is emulated. No emulators support the DS's keyboard attachment, so to make it play in Dsemume, a PAR code is needed to allow the game to start without it. I am also using a LUA script that maps my physical keyboard keys to the on-screen keyboard. Unfortunately, since this only works when the bottom screen is showing the keyboard, I wasn't able to do the bonus during the end credits.)
