In Red/Blue, it is possible to encounter 'M (00) on left-facing shore tiles at the beginning of the game without the need of a compatible name or the old man,
because the wild encounter table (for grass or cave encounters) has not yet been initialised.

Steps:

1. Choose rival name BLUE
2. Set up SRAM glitch https://glitchcity.wiki/wiki/SRAM_glitch
3. Swap party pokemon 2 with party pokemon 10 to get expanded bag
4. Set up dry underflow glitch in pc to get expanded pc items https://glitchcity.wiki/wiki/Dry_unde...
5. Change PC item 51 quantity to 14
6. Change item 36 quantity to 08 to warp to Cinnabar Island then enter the Pokémon Center
7. Change box with itself to access glitch box 15
8. Flash Cancel (TM55) at top of bag to avoid name freeze
9. Withdraw second pokémon in box (rhydon hybrid) to change party counter to 1
10. Exit Pokémon Center and walk to the left-facing shore tiles, and face to the left (away from them)
11. Navigate the bag until item 24 (Rival's name character 3 or the "U" in "BLUE", which will be a glitch item called E t E (hex:94).
12. Use the Rival's effect https://glitchcity.wiki/wiki/Rival%27... from this glitch item to move up and down the coast. While navigating the menu, carefully press B one press at a time when
the menu freezes due to lag glitch items, to move past them. You can now find and catch 'M (00), as well as the Ditto that appear after catching it once.
