Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak - Part 84: Finale
After bringing down the Tower and doing our lap through town talking to everyone, it is time to bring this story to an end...
Overall, I have to say I was pretty impressed with the story here. It hits all of the notes a lot better than anything we saw during the Cold Steel days, and it reminded me of the older stories. It felt like there were stakes in the various battles, but at times the way Almata would always escape did get a little annoying.
In terms of characters, Agnes did not really impress me, but the rest of the cast were decent. Sadly, since I know some of the problems coming in the upcoming game, I didn't really get too attached to anyone in particular. It was interesting that Van has his aggro pulling mechanic as that helps make him one of the tankier characters we've ever had, and if you've seen other games that I've played, that is how I prefer my characters.
I was not a fan of the action elements that seem to be forcing their way into the series. Should they ever become dominant, that is when I am going to drop things and walk away. I was hoping Falcom got the message by how some people were not fans of it here, but you can see it in the Sky 1 remake trailer, so I suspect it is here to stay.
Ultimately, Daybreak is not perfect, but it is one of the best I've seen in some time. If not for the Crossbell duo games coming west recently, it would have been an even longer time. Sadly, I know to go into this next game with extremely low expectations, so sadly Falcom could not keep up what they had here. When the time comes to stick a fork in the Calvard arc of the story, hopefully we can find ourselves in a narrative as strong as what we found here.
