LEGO Ninjago Movie - Cole's Quake Mech Unboxing, Speed Build & Review 70632
Hi LEGO fans! Here's my LEGO Quake Mech 70632 review, one of the new 2018 LEGO Ninjago Movie sets. Finally Cole gets his own LEGO mech and it's a very impressive Ninjago set standing 12 inches tall with a 1,202 part count. Included in this 2018 Ninjago movie set are five minifigures: Cole, Misako (Koko), reporter Fred Finley and from Garmadon's Shark Army we have Crusher and Mike the Spike.
Cole's Quake Mech is a very impressive LEGO set and very well constructed. The build is quite complex, so pay attention to those recommended ages on the box. The Quake Mech is balanced on a huge LEGO wheel and looks precariously balanced but thankfully we have a built-in stand to enable Cole's Quake Mech to be displayed in an upright and reasonably stable position. You can still roll this Ninjago mech around on the wheel but to me, this is definitely more a cool display piece than something for kids to play with.
Visually, the Quake Mech is stunning with a cool black and gold color scheme and many gold elements, some of which are rare to find. Stickering is limited to a few "quake" banners and some cool emblems of a gorilla which really add to the visual appeal of Cole's LEGO mech. Cole has a driving position in a cockpit complete with a set of DJ record decks which he can use to blast out earth-shaking sound from an large array of LEGO speakers mounted on the mech. Some of those speakers are hidden behind a secret compartment on the Quake Mech's arms and when revealed operate as flick missiles which are cool, but ultimately a pretty feeble weapon compared to other Ninjago Movie mechs.
The Misako (Koko) minifigure looks super cool on the box and has some great details including a printed skirt, detailed quiver and some great metallic printing, not to mention custom headgear consisting of a metal headpiece overflowing with Misako's red hair. I don't know whether I just got a bad print but the facial printing on this new for 2018 Ninjago minifigure is terrible. LEGO attempted to print Misako's face on a black minifigure head and the result is very poor. Misako's face looks washed out and lacks the clarity we expect to see from a printed minifigure, especially when she's a major character. If it hadn't come out of a LEGO box, I would have thought it was a counterfeit piece and I'll definitely be reaching out to LEGO to share my thoughts.
In conclusion for this LEGO 70632 review, I would recommend Cole's Quake Mech to more advanced LEGO builders and adult fans of LEGO who value style over function. It looks very cool indeed but I fear the Quake Mech will not stand up to serious play. At $90, it's not a cheap set but looks great when displayed with other Ninjago Movie mechs.
