Let's Challenge Super Mario 64 (Closeup Run) - Part 15: A Hazy Maze Cave, a hazy part
I still don't know what to do about the Hyphy Movement, the San Francisco Bay Area residents who prove that it doesn't deserve to be called the "Yay Area", the shallow girls who would say "wanna suck my pee" just to mock me, and the Oakland rioters. But remember that surprise I mentioned in the outro of my Battalion Wars LP? Well, this is the surprise. I am going through Super Mario 64 with the camera set to close up as frequently as possible. And I have to thank MarioMastar for his LP inspiring me to get this off the ground. He knows quite a bit about the game--both the N64 version and the DS version. So consider checking his LP out. As for the challenge itself? I actually did this when I was young and the game was less than 3 years old. So far, it's not proving easy, but so it goes. (And I'd do the courses in order if not for worries about creating filler time spent on gathering 1-Ups.)
Hazy Maze Cave, though I visited it earlier, wasn't explored. But basically, it's...a labyrinth. But at least the game provides maps of the level in several locations. Heh. So the game makes sure that dealing with this maze wouldn't be a farce like it is in the original Metroid and its Copy And Paste Environments. Of course, this wouldn't be the Closeup Run if there wasn't some beeswax to deal with before all is said and done. First off, the Camera Screw makes it hard to gather the Blue Coins, and I BARELY scrape for the 100 Coin Star because of it. Wouldn't be so bad if the Mr. Is could be killed when it's already absurd to try on a NORMAL run, though at least the Scuttle Bugs and Snufits could actually be, you know, KILLED CONVENIENTLY. And then there's the farce of an idea of getting back from Dorrie's lake to the rest of the stage. To this day, I do not know if you can actually make the jumps necessary to get across the Black Hole's slopes.
Speaking of the Black Hole room, Star 5 also is annoying. I end up cheating with the camera by zooming out to get my bearings because if you think the Camera Screw wasn't bad before, try dealing with being unable to know where exactly on the wiring you're on and accidently swing off the edges because of that bloody narrow room. The big insult the game delivers to me is zooming out regardless as I reach the corner, just enough to make it clear where I am from that point onward.
Other than that, standard stage. Just that wretched Black Hole is why this stage got picked off. Beyond that, it has to compete with other stages in a Mario game.
Oh, and Star 6 is a little obtuse, but thankfully not the horror show that was Tall Tall Mountain's own 6th Star.
After that, MIPS reappears carrying another star, which he does after you get 50 Stars (by the way, Bowser ISN'T a Bad Boss, something I need to point out for those who are bugged by MIPS being loyal to him), and there's a Toad guy on 3F who provides a star. That out of the way, we can try to get to the top of the "endless" stairs....I hope.
