Published by Phoenix Games and developed by Mere Mortals, who once again hide their damned name in the copyright, we have a Robin Hood game! Longplayed a Robin Hood game before and it was boring and bad, but it was 3D, it was stealth based and it looked like it had SOME kind of budget.

This... this is not that. What THIS is is a cheapo plug-n-play game put onto the PS2. That is all this is. You move a crosshair around, shooting at enemies running left and right on the screen. You hit a few without missing, you get bonuses. You can find bonus targets like birds and breakables for points. There is a highscore board. And there is a story. It's all bad.

The enemies? Well you have the regular guards, who only run left and right and do nothing really. Sure, sometimes they appear right in your face, but they do this at random and they're easy to quickly take down so they're of no threat.

The bowmen are a threat though, as the guys in red will stop and try to shoot at you. They don't do much damage, but in numbers they can do alot. Their shots can also get blocked by stuff in the background or foreground, so you can use that to shield yourself easily. Unfortunately, this also usually means you cant hit them either, as those objects can block your shots too, even if there is gaps there because the hit detection in this game is god awful.

There's also the catapults, loaded by people in green running towards it. There's always only 2 guys and only 1 catapult. If you let this go on, even if they're offscreen, you will end up getting hit by their shots and it WILL take off most of your health, making them the most dangerous enemy in the game. Get rid of them first, every time.

And lastly, there's the knight in the last level of the game. He constantly runs back and forth, trying to get in your screen to either taunt you or shoot you. And honestly... i don't think you can kill him. Shooting at him just makes a ding sound and makes him turn around. Nothing really hurts the guy. The best i could do is move him out of my view as much as possible to survive. He's the boss of this game, too, but every single stage is only won by just waiting out the timer, so... what the hell.

You get your health back after each stage and you have to manually reload your arrows every time. You can move the screen with either moving the cursor to the left or right of the screen, or with the L1 and R1 buttons. The reload goes fast enough that even though you can't shoot during reload, it won't take that long for you to be able to get what you need to resume firing. However, if you screw up at any point and die, you have to restart from the beginning. So... yea, you're not allowed to fail once.

The story is poor, as it tries to retell the story of Robin Hood, but it goes about it in such a crap way with some poor spelling and grammar to go with it too. And you only see the story in certain spots too. And it never really connects with what is going on, because the game is so nothing that it doesn't connect with any story whatsoever. You could literally have this be a generic archery plug n play game and it'd make no difference.

Commentary track coming soon.

So yea. More terrible Phoenix Games stuff. It keeps getting worse. It keeps getting cheaper. They just keep that bar lowered hard with each of these terrible releases. The fact they even got away with selling this plug n play garbage as a PS2 game SHOULD shock me. But at this point, considering everything else we've experienced with them so far... this is par for the course.
