Let's Play 8-Bit Armies #24 | Renegades 24: Acid Rain
Finally: heavy tanks!
8-Bit Armies is a 2016 real-time strategy game developed and published by Petroglyph Games. The game was originally developed for Windows, and in 2018 also released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
Despite its name, the game does not feature 8-bit graphics, and uses a Minecraft-like visual style instead. 8-Bit Armies's gameplay is bare bones; resources are collected from oil wells, structures build from a headquarters, and units via various production facilities.
The unit and building roster is very simple. There is a light and heavy variant of most units, with the former excelling against infantry and the latter against vehicles and buildings. There is a also a nuclear rocket that selectively destroys enemy units and structures.
8-Bit Armies's story is almost non-existent, and the campaign consist of 25 mission largely defined by their missions goals rather than the plot. There is also a 12-mission coop campaign for two players.
When the player completes a mission, they earn a bronze medal. Should they also complete all bonus objectives, they will earn a silver medal. To earn the gold medal, they usually have to complete the mission and all bonus objectives in a set amount of time.
By earning medal, the player's starting army and base are expanded, which makes later missions easier. Missions can be replayed to earn higher medals.
8-Bit Armies received mixed to positive reviews. It was praised for its soundtrack (composed by Frank Klepacki) and accessibility, but criticised for its simplicity and lack of content.
