Age of Empires III is a 2005 real-time strategy game developed Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios for Windows and Mac. It is the sequel to Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings and the third main entry in the Age of Empires series.
Whereas Age of Empires and Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings covers Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and early modern times, Age of Empires III focuses entirely on the discovery and exploration of the New World by European colonial powers. Playable factions include France, Britain, Spain, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, Russia, the Netherlands, and Portugal.
Age of Empires III largely works like its predecessors, but adds a couple of new mechanics. All civilisations now have explorers, which function as hero units, and players get access to power-up cards during a game. These cards provide the player with resources, new units, or upgrades. Deck customisation is included too.
Age of Empires III received favourable reviews, and receives two expansions in 2006 and 2007. The first one, Age of Empires III: The WarChiefs, adds three Native American civilisations, whereas the second one, Age of Empires III: The Asian Dynasties, makes the Chinese, Japanese, and Indians playable.
