Let's Play - Borderlands 2 - Part 5: Emergent Gameplay I
Solon introduces Emergent Gameplay as a fluid force in video games. This isn't something you can really capture in Data Points. It doesn't fit on a graph. But it is one of the most important life-goos coursing through the veins of all games from Tag to Duck Hunt. Solon also won't stop whining about the hopelessly dense cars in Borderlands 2. Meanwhile, Saxton gets his driver's license!
Many articles talk about Emergent Gameplay as giving players choices and examining what they do with those choices, but that is just analyzing player agency. Emergent Gameplay can be found by the player turning the game on, by the player pulling a trigger when they do depending on their circumstance in the game, by choosing to walk instead of drive, by turning the game off with or without saving. It is so much more holistic than 'what choice did you make out of the five my game gives you'. It is why we play, we talk, we compete, we game, we cheat, we quit, we camp, and we /dance. (This also transcends video games and bleeds into real life: Why we riot, we pray, we sing, etc.) Emergent Gameplay is everywhere, including the next episode.
Like Borderlands 2, RDLP is as cooperative as you want it to be. Please ask questions and write comments and help me excavate this game!
